History of Christianity in China (in Mandarin) – Dr. Shan Chen (CH201) SEE NEW DATES

$40

It’s been well over a millennium since the Nestorians first brought Christianity to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The survival and growth of this “foreign” religion have been subject to the political needs and even the whims of dynastic rulers. It was not until the arrival of the Protestant missionaries in the early 19th century and the production of the Chinese-language Bible that facilitated the indigenization of Christianity in China. The exponential growth of Chinese Christians in the last fifty years in the wake of decades of suppression indicates a strong resilience in the Chinese Church.

The statement “all history is contemporary history” (Benedetto Croce, Italian philosopher, 1866-1952) points to the interpretative nature of historical events. More than just a look at the past, this course intends to explore the interaction between Christianity and Chinese culture, how the Chinese Church can continue to grow, to form a strong voice in world Christianity and to play an instrumental role in fulfilling the Great Commission.
